Zohar:  Occupy Wall St (OWS ) and Arab Spring from the Humor and Spiritual Realms   By Marcos Wasem

Zohar, the book’s main character, who appears along the vignettes published as daily commentary on what happens to us as a result of the new social movements, is both a version of the observer who intervenes in the scene and a concrete reference to the cabalistic tradition which starts with the homonymous book. The Sefer Zohar ( “Book of  glow”) is published in Spain for the first time in the 8th century, under  the signature of Moses ben Sem Tob from Leon. The signature, however, can be associated with different writers within the masoretic literature: in the orthodox tradition, with the patriarchs Abraham and Moses who supposedly received directly from God the kabbalah’s foundational text, communicated       orally until  Shimeon Bar Yojai ,one of the refugees after the defeat of   Bar Kojba’s rebellion, puts it in writing in the 2nd century AC. Moses Ben Sem Tob from Leon gives credit for the book to Bar Yojai. However, Ben Sem Tob’s  widow stated after his death that the accreditation was  caused by her husband’s desire to give value to the book and this way be able to sell it more easily.

These type of ironies  permeate the history of masoret, to which Zohar refers elliptically : between the apocryphal and the genuinely inspired, the non-guaranteed condition of existence in the diaspora alters the specific conditions in which the character travels through the events that affect our present times: the Arab spring and Wall Street occupation. Zohar is a nomad who passes by these events, Ahashverus who intervenes in the present to question it  to ask  if it is possible in nowadays’ critical contexts  to keep the ethical and human balances which present Zohar and the Sefer Ietzira as ideal models of balance between man and the universe.

In Alejandro Dron’s activity as a visual artist one can identify the influence both from the Jewish tradition, to which I have been referring to, and the ideas of the Madi movement which was started by Gyula Kosice and Carmelo Arden Quin in the late 40′s. Madi proposes esthetic principles that aim to give art a new direction after what its manifesto considers a failure of industrial societies by the end of the second world war:

‘In the countries that reached the culminating stage of their industrial development, the old state of things of the  burgeois realism disappeared almost completely; there naturalism is retreating and defends itself very weakly. Then abstraction, essentially expressive and romantic, takes its place. In this trend, the schools of figurative art from cubism up to surrealism are included. Those schools have responded to ideological needs of the times and their work represent invaluable contributions to the problems posed to our current culture. Eventhough their historic time must be understood as gone, on the other hand, their insistence in the topic ‘ outside’ of its own qualities is going back to being in service of naturalism against the true constructive spirit that spreads throughout all countries  and cultures, as in expressionism, surrealism, constructivism, etc.” (Madi Manifiesto)

The answer will be abstract art, ” dots and lines on a surface”, a turn towards the geometry that looks for a relationship with the indigenous and in general non western art forms. Alejandro Dron rediscovers this way the abstract potential of the Hebrew alphabet’s geometric designs, which have been the main material in his series of sculptures: the letter as an abstract support of geometric figuration. Zohar is also a geometric figure, two triangles combined which talk from their mutism. The silent letter ,like Aleph,  is  prompting the meanings that the character’s actions perform over the present reality, though. Like Madi, its place of  enunciation is not the voice but the performance of a critic.

The object of the critic is the present times. It comes from humor and spirituality simultaneously. Zohar is a privileged witness of the current inflexion of capitalism, in which the capital accumulation processes that the financial system has been generating  put in danger the very existence of humanity as a species. This capitalism, different from the one Marx analyzed and from the one the  Madi founding members  knew, is not based on production but on credit. Its capital does not include actual assets but promises to pay, stock MARKET speculations, it bears a facade of solvency that balances on a vacuum. Its best symbol is the hole, a hole with which Zohar plays, establishing in its edges the possibility of an existence beyond the space delimited by the relationships of capital.

For those of us who are involved in the occupation of Wall St, Zohar proves to be a necessary ally that can , from his mutism, contribute  with his action a great critical awareness on the prestidigitation games that the financial capital offers us. His parodic attitude regarding the present reality  and his nomadic condition, allow us to remember that it is always possible to open a space of independent thinking and to keep a critical distance from  the current  crisis of capitalism.

By Marcos Wasem      September 22, 2012     New York.
